Houston Airports

Houston has two major commercial airports, Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby, both just a short commute from the Central Business District, and a
reasonable distance from hotel hubs and convention facilities.

Each year more than 38 million people zip in and out of Houston's two major airports. In the year 1999 the Houston Airport System handled 42 million travelers, and 44.4 million travelers in the year 2000. This steadily increasing volume of travelers has prepared the City's transportation team to meet the challenge of getting you and your group in and out of the City on schedule. The City's largest airport, Bush Intercontinental Airport, joined the Houston Airport System in June 1969. Bush Intercontinental is located approximately 23 miles north of downtown Houston, near the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8 North). The airport is operated and maintained by the City of Houston Department of Aviation.

The City also operates Houston's second largest airport, Hobby Airport, which has been serving the area for more than 60 years.

Hobby Airport is located approximately seven miles south of downtown Houston, near I-45/Gulf Freeway, the major highway heading from the City to NASA and Galveston Island. In addition, the City also operates Ellington Field, a joint use civil/military airport. Ellington now supports the operations of the United States military, NASA, Continental Express, United Parcel Service and general aviation. The airport is home to the largest flying club in Texas and is the site of the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow.

Ellington Field is located approximately 15 miles south of downtown Houston, near I-45/Gulf Freeway.
